Many homes across Suffolk still rely on wiring installed thirty, forty or even fifty years ago. Cable insulation degrades over time, older installations often lack RCD protection, and a layout designed in the 1970s rarely copes with today's kitchens, home offices and chargers. We rewire homes and businesses in Bury St Edmunds and across West Suffolk.

We carry out full rewires for homes and commercial premises, and partial rewires where only some circuits need replacing, such as a kitchen, an extension or a single floor. Either way you get a new installation designed around how you use the building, tested and certified to the current edition of BS 7671.

Signs your property may need rewiring

Age alone doesn't mean a rewire is necessary, so we'll always test before recommending one. These are the common warning signs:

  • Rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cables, or black twin-and-earth from the 1960s
  • An old fuse box with rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • No earth conductor on lighting circuits, or metal switches and fittings that aren't earthed
  • Scorch marks, warm sockets, buzzing switches or a burning smell
  • Frequent tripping, or not enough sockets, leading to extension leads everywhere

How a rewire works

Before starting we agree a layout with you room by room, covering sockets, switches, lighting, data points and anything else you'd like. A typical three-bedroom house takes around a week to rewire, depending on access and finishes. We work in a logical order so you can usually stay in the property, and we keep power on to essential circuits wherever we can at the end of each day.

First fix involves lifting floorboards where needed, chasing walls and running new cables. Second fix is fitting accessories, a new consumer unit, testing and commissioning. We make good our chases ready for plastering and leave the site clean every day.

Rewiring for landlords and businesses

For rental properties, a rewire is often the most cost-effective response to a poor EICR. It replaces an endless list of remedial items with a single new installation. For shops, offices and workshops we can rewire in planned phases, so parts of the building stay in use while we work.

Full & partial rewires across West Suffolk

Based in Bury St Edmunds, we provide full & partial rewires for homeowners, landlords and businesses in Bury St Edmunds, Thetford, Needham Market, Sudbury, Newmarket, Elmswell, Great Barton and Ixworth, plus the villages in between.

Frequently asked questions

Can't see your question? Call us on 07738 271863 or use the quote form and we'll get back to you.

How much does a rewire cost?

It depends on the size of the property, how many circuits and accessories you want, and how easy access is. We'll visit, look at the existing installation and give you a fixed written quote with no hidden extras.

Do I need to move out during a rewire?

Usually not. Most people stay at home, although it is disruptive. We plan the work room by room and restore lighting and essential power at the end of each day wherever possible.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. You'll receive an Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified to building control through our NAPIT membership, so you'll also receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate.

What's the difference between a full and partial rewire?

A full rewire replaces every circuit in the property. A partial rewire replaces specific circuits, such as a kitchen or upstairs ring, where the rest of the installation tests satisfactorily.
