Consumer unit and fuse board upgrades

Your consumer unit is the heart of your electrical installation. A modern board protects people, property and appliances far better than an old fuse box can.

If your home still has a fuse box with rewireable fuses, or an early plastic consumer unit with no RCD protection, an upgrade is one of the most worthwhile safety improvements you can make. We upgrade fuse boards in Bury St Edmunds and across West Suffolk.

We fit modern metal-clad consumer units with RCBO protection on each circuit and surge protection, from quality manufacturers. With RCBOs, a fault on one circuit only trips that circuit, so a faulty kettle doesn't leave you with no lights.

Why upgrade your fuse board?

  • RCD protection that cuts the power in a fraction of a second if someone touches a live part
  • Individual circuit protection, so a fault doesn't take out the whole house
  • Surge protection for sensitive electronics, boilers and appliances
  • A non-combustible metal enclosure, as required in homes by the wiring regulations
  • Spare capacity for EV chargers, heat pumps, solar and new circuits

What happens on the day

Before we replace a board, we test the existing circuits. A new consumer unit with sensitive RCD protection can reveal hidden faults, such as damaged cables or neutral-earth faults, that an old fuse box simply ignored. If we find any, we'll explain them and agree how to resolve them before going ahead.

Most domestic upgrades take around half a day to a full day, with power off for part of that time. Every circuit is clearly labelled, and you'll receive an Electrical Installation Certificate plus Building Regulations notification.

Distribution boards for commercial premises

For shops, offices and workshops we upgrade and replace distribution boards, add sub-boards for new areas and improve circuit labelling and discrimination, so a fault in one area doesn't stop the whole business.

Consumer unit (fuse board) upgrades across West Suffolk

Based in Bury St Edmunds, we provide consumer unit (fuse board) upgrades for homeowners, landlords and businesses in Bury St Edmunds, Thetford, Needham Market, Sudbury, Newmarket, Elmswell, Great Barton and Ixworth, plus the villages in between.

Frequently asked questions

Can't see your question? Call us on 07738 271863 or use the quote form and we'll get back to you.

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?

For most homes, half a day to a full day, including testing. You'll be without power for part of that time, and we'll tell you roughly when in advance.

My old board works fine, so why change it?

Older boards often lack RCD protection, which is the device most likely to save someone from a fatal shock. If the board has no RCD, we'd strongly recommend an upgrade.

Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?

Not always. We'll check whether your current board has a spare way and suitable protection. If not, an upgrade is often the neatest solution.
